  25. This very preliminary (since I haven't done much optimizing for 
  26. different machine types, and I may also try a variety of compilers),
  27. but here are some rough comparisons.  Starting with the best 040
  28. Amigas (like those using the 40 MHz Warp Engine), those are roughly
  29. equivalent in rendering power to my 66 MHz 486DX2 PC, which is in
  30. turn about 2.5 times slower than my 100 MHz R4400 PC.  I don't have
  31. a Pentium, but those fall somewhere in between the 486 and MIPS
  32. (closer to the MIPS side).  My fastest machine uses a 275 MHz Alpha
  33. AXP chip, and it's roughly three times faster than the MIPS (and
  34. therefore about 7.5 times faster than my 486 or the best Amigas).
  35. Note that MIPS PCs more recent than mine tend to use R4600s and have
  36. higher clock speeds, so they would be better than my numbers might
  37. indicate.
